Expression of Interest: Development of an Integrated Approach for Non-Medical Hazardous Waste Management in Countries with Limited Treatment Options

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation providing emergency assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. Guided by the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence, MSF delivers lifesaving medical and humanitarian support in more than 70 countries worldwide.

As part of its commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, MSF has launched several environmental sustainability initiatives focusing on responsible resource management, waste reduction, and environmentally sound disposal practices

MSF operations generate significant quantities of non-medical hazardous waste, including batteries, electronic waste (e-waste), fleet-related waste, and other materials that require specialised handling and disposal. In many humanitarian contexts where MSF operates, local treatment and disposal options remain limited or unavailable, creating environmental, regulatory, and operational challenges.

In response, MSF launched the pilot project: "Development of an Integrated Approach for Non-Medical Hazardous Waste Management in Countries with Limited Treatment Options", which focuses on environmentally sound transportation, export, treatment, and final disposal pathways

MSF seeks qualified and experienced service providers capable of supporting the safe and compliant management of non-medical hazardous waste generated in South Sudan.

We intend to launch a tender to identify service providers that can handle one or more of the following criteria: service providers may choose to apply for either of the batches, two of them or all of them:

• Batch 1: Transport — Transport and logistics services for the movement of non-medical hazardous waste.

• Batch 2: Customs — Customs clearance, export procedures, import requirements, and regulatory compliance services.

• Batch 3: Waste management — Environmentally sound treatment, recovery, recycling, and/or final disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with applicable international standards.
