MSF Eastern Africa Media Fellowship 2024
The MSF Eastern Africa Media Fellowship was initiated in 2024, aiming at journalists in Kenya. More than 400 journalists applied for this opportunity. The first edition included a full-day workshop led by Rachael Akidi, after which participants submitted their pitches. Ultimately, three successful journalists received reporting grants to cover humanitarian stories from Kenya and South Sudan.

His winning pitch focussed on Kaposi Sarcoma (KS), a cancer affecting the skin, lungs, and digestive tract. It explored how treatment failure, delayed access to care, poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy, and socio-economic vulnerabilities like poor nutrition continue to push patients into advanced stages of diseases. To cover this story, Wakhungu travelled to Homa Bay county, Kenya, where MSF cares for patients with advanced HIV/AIDS, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
